Offshore Capture

The Protected Species Branch partners with other regional organizations to capture and sample sea turtles in their offshore foraging grounds. Most of the vessel support has been provided by the Coonamessett Farm Foundation working with the commercial sea scallop fishery, including Viking Village Fisheries.

The United States Mid-Atlantic region is an important foraging ground for sea turtles, but relatively little is known about the turtles in this region due to complications involved with locating and capturing the immature and adult turtles on these offshore foraging grounds.
