What is the purpose of the Strategy?

The development of a NOAA-wide, forward looking Ocean Noise Strategy (ONS) began following our CetSound tool building project. The ONS will articulate NOAA's vision for addressing ocean noise impacts over the next 10 years and guide science and management actions towards that vision.

NOAA's 10 year Ocean Noise Strategy: (https://cetsound.noaa.gov/ons)

Successful implementation of the ONS is intended to lead to:
  • Integrated NOAA management actions to reduce the acute, chronic, and cumulative effects of noise.
  • NOAA and others conducting research to fill critical gaps and best inform management decisions.
  • NOAA developing publicly available tools to support assessment, planning, and mitigation for noise-making activities across large spatial and temporal scales.
  • NOAA promoting public understanding of noise impacts in the U.S. and abroad.
