An Invitation from Bill Karp

Science & Research Director
NOAA/NMFS/Northeast Fisheries Science Center

I am writing to let you know about our upcoming review of science programs at the NEFSC that support ecosystem and climate science. The review meeting will take place at our Woods Hole, MA laboratory June 6-10, 2016.

Similar reviews are being carried out at each of the NMFS regional science centers this year as part of an ongoing process to routinely evaluate our science enterprise. We currently plan that 2017 program reviews will focus on another area of our work, economics and social sciences.

A team of experts will conduct the upcoming peer review. The reviewers will evaluate the quality, relevance, and performance of science and research conducted and provide advice on planning future science and research. Opportunities for input by members of the public will be provided each day.

Information on the meeting and how to participate, background documents, a list of panelists, the agenda, and presentations prepared for the review, and final reports will be available on this website.

The work under review is essential to addressing ecosystem considerations as we move toward ecosystem-based fishery management the region. I expect this review will highlight some of our strengths but also identify areas where improvement is merited, and help us to chart a course to advance our work. I consider peer reviews to be necessary steps in evaluating our science and in the process of change as we adapt to new challenges and new ideas. I encourage and welcome your attendance at our upcoming review.
