Woods Hole Science Aquarium Visit Helps Inspire School Mural

Students from Teaticket Elementary School in Falmouth, Mass. turned a visit to NOAA’s Woods Hole Science Aquarium into inspiration for a mural, “Tigers by the Sea,” installed at the school on August 29.

The marine-themed mural was funded by the Falmouth Education Foundation (FEF) and was a collaboration with students in Falmouth High School’s National Art Honor Society, Falmouth High School and Teaticket Elementary School teachers, Teaticket students in kindergarten and grade 4, and the Falmouth Public Schools maintenance department.

The artwork’s name refers to the school’s logo, the Teaticket Tigers. The colorful mural is installed on the brick wall near the front of the school. FEF funded materials and a field trip to Woods Hole, where kindergarten students learned about local marine life and conducted research for the project during visits to the Woods Hole Science Aquarium and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution’s Ocean Science Exhibit Center. Many of the animals featured in the mural are displayed in tanks at the Aquarium. Information about the animals is also available in exhibits throughout the Aquarium and in the outdoor seal habitat.
