Using passive acoustics to improve management and conservation of marine mammals in the western North Atlantic

Danielle Cholewiak

Passive acoustic monitoring is an essential tool for scientists and managers to better understand the distribution, abundance and ecology of marine species.  The NEFSC is using a variety of acoustic platforms to monitor for cetaceans in both inshore and offshore waters, ranging from bottom-mounted recorders to towed arrays and gliders.  This talk will highlight some of the current passive acoustic research being conducted in the Protected Species Branch of the NEFSC.
