MESSAGE: HELLO ANNE, STEVE.  4AM NOW AND WEATHER LOOKS LIKE IT MAY FINALLY START TO SETTLE DOWN. FRUSTRATING TIME WITH WIND, SEAS.  NEVER SETTLED DOWN FOR US.  WIND DIRECTION STAYED SAME, SEAS BUILT TO 15FT.  I WAS ONLY SCIENTIST TO EAT DINNER...WEATHER DEFINITELY AFFECTING CATCHES.  GOT TO 400 FTHMS, BUT HAD TO BREAK OFF AT 15FT SEAS.  DOORS CROSSED, NET TWISTED.  CATCH LITTLE TO NONE,  BUT STILL SAW MONKS (2+) CAUGHT IN WINGS. ONLY GOT SOME RED CRAB IN BAG.  MUST RE-TOW.  HAVE YET TO COMPLETE FULL TRANSECT. ONE NICE THING; ONLY 1 SMALL BRUSH W/ROCKS/NET DAMAGE.  MONKS STAYED AT 1-2 BASKET TO 350, PROBABLY WOULD HAVE HAD MORE.  CONSISTENT COUPLE WHITE HAKE.  WITH LARGER MESH, AVOIDED HUGE NUMBERS OF LONGFIN AND OFFSHORE HAKE THAT CENTER AROUND 350 FTHMS.  NEED SOME FLAT WATER TO REALLY SEE WHAT IS THERE, CLOCK TICKING.  HAVE SCANNED FOR BLACKFIN, NO YET.  HAVE NOTED GREEN AND BLUE EYED MONK AS WELL AS VARIABLE MOTTLING, ALL AMER. LARGE THORNY SKATES ALSO.  JIM GETTING GOOD RED CRAB DATA; HAVEN'T HIT BIG MALES YET (DEEPER, I THINK). ONE VERY INTERESTING CATCH FOR SUSAN; LARGE 51CM WITCH FLDR 350FTHM. FIRST LARGE WITCH I'VE SEEN IN SLOPE WATER.  FROZEN.  AM UP FOR EVERY TOW, NOT JUST DUE TO INTEREST.  WISH I HAD BETTER NEWS ON PROGRESS.  WEATHER REPORTS HAVE BEEN WRONG ENTIRE TRIP.  CATCHING NO BREAKS.....TODAY FEELS LIKE GOOD DAY. OG FEEL SILLY TALK LIKE CAVEMAN. COMPUTER BOX THAT SEND MESSAGE AMAZING THING, BUT NOT WANT TO MAKE IT FEEL OUTDATED OR MAY MALFUNCTION AGAIN.  IF KEEP PRIMITIVE TALK THEN MACHINE THINK IT VERY ADVANCED (PLUS RETYPING ENTIRE FAILED MESSAGE LESS EXCRUCIATING WITH FEWER WORDS)....OH SH%X!...I USED A BIG WORD.

MESSAGE: MORNING, IT IS NICE OUT HERE AS WELL.  IN REGARDS TO THE VIDEO, THE BOTTOM WAS SAND.  THE TICKLER STIRRED IT UP BUT I DO NOT THINK THERE COULD BE BETTER BOTTOM UNLESS WE TOWED OVER SHALE.  WE ARE PROCEEDING TO 40 FATHOMS TO DO DEPLETION, THEN MORE VIDEO WITHOUT TICKLER.  OUR VIDEO HAS SOME FOOTAGE OF MONKFISH, PERHAPS WHEN ANALYZED IN FRONT OF  LARGE SCREEN TV MORE WILL BE SEEN.  LOOKS LIKE WE MIGHT FINISH UP LATE TODAY UNLESS YOU HAVE OTHER REQUESTS.  WING SPREAD OVER 110 FATHOMS APPEARS TO BE APPROXIMATELY 150 FEET. MESSAGE:SECOND TRY.
NOT THE BEST LUCK BUT EVERYTHING IS OK. IT APPEARS THAT THE NET'S MOUTH OPENING IS LESS THAN TWO FEET. THIS HAS THE EFFECT OF PLACING OUR WING AND HEADROPE SENSOR TOO CLOSE TO THE BOTTOM TO GET DECENT READINGS. DOOR SPREAD READINGS ARE OK AND WITH SOME FIGURING, WE WILL BE ABLE TO ESTIMATE WINGSPREAD.  YESTERDAY WE HAD A SHORT WHILE TO TRY THE CAMERA BEFORE IT GOT DARK. THE WINCH IS A LITTLE STIFF AND CAUSED A CONNECTOR TO PULL APART. WE ARE HOPING FOR SOME GOOD WEATHER TO TRY AGAIN. AT THIS TIME, THEY ARE CALLING FOR GUSTS TO 45KTS. WE ARE TRYING TO DO SOME OFFSHORE STATIONS BEFORE IT GETS BAD. I THINK WE WILL BE RIDING OUT THE STORM SHORTLY. HOPEFULLY IT WILL BE SHORT LIVED AND WE CAN RESUME OPERATIONS WITHOUT TOO MUCH WASTED TIME. WE HAVE BEEN SURROUNDED BY LOBSTER GEAR BUT HAVE PAIR IN AT 70 AND 110 FA.  WE COMPLETED ANNE'S 5-9 STATION AND GOT ONE STATION IN AT 40 BEFORE IT GOT TOO DARK TO SEE THE GEAR.

Subject: RE: "GOOSEFISH"

Paul -  I am a little concerned about your terminology of what I would term the "soft bottom" net versus the "hard bottom" net both of which are rock hoppers.  The Mary K is using a cookie net which is what everyone south of Cape Cod will think of when you term our "soft bottom" net a flatfish net.  That is unless they think of a chain sweep net instead.  It is important to term these nets in terms that will be clear to all.  The catchability of a "soft bottom" rock hopper should be much less than a cookie net on the same kind of bottom.  I don't care what names you assign them - Bertha and Alice are fine - in which case the Mary is using George.

[Steve's Interpretation: 15 stations completed, the next one to be done is stratum 39, tow 12.  Lobster pots and rocks inshore.  The tickler chain (used to encourage monkfish into the net) was lost yesterday, but replaced.  The data loggers for bottom temp, bottom contact and GPS logging are apparently functioning properly.  Catches of monkfish (goosefish) are light, the air temp. in the fish hold is cold, and they are concerned with the weather forecast for the weekend.]
