Figure 1. Semelparity, American eel (Anguilla rostrata). American eel spawn in the Sargasso Sea, their larvae are dispersed by currents to North America, and they live most of their lives in freshwater ecosystems. After several years, they mature, migrate downstream and return to the Sargasso Sea to spawn once and die.
