Figure 4. Otolith section from a 29 cm age 17 male redfish. This otolith has been sectioned slightly off from the nucleus, resulting in an irregularly shaped first annulus. Due to the fact that the annuli along the dorsal edge are compact and not very distinct, counting annuli outwards towards the proximal edge is the most accurate and precise way of determining age in older fish (>15).
