Validating Ocean Circulation Models with Lobstermen-deployed Drifters

A set of four surface drifters will be deployed  by lobstermen at  various depths  (ranging from 5 to 50 fathoms) along four cross-isobath transects in each of the four months June-September 2004.  The transects will be located off Cutler, Isle of Haut, Cape Small, and Gloucester.  In addition to these standard locations,  other sets will deployed in particular places and times to test specific hypothesis.  So, while it is expected that many will come ashore, as many as 100 drifters may be floating off the coast of New England later this summer.  The details of this project will be discussed  including its objective to validate numerical circulation models as well as the protocol for mariners to follow on sighting one of these units.
