Spring 2007 Update: Annual Phytoplankton Cycle-Southern New England

The annual phytoplankton cycle for Southern New England in 2006 is overlaid on the climatological cycle for comparison (see top panel). The spring bloom did not develop in 2006, so the duration of the spring period was taken from climatological estimates. The concentrations of the summer and fall periods appear to be below average. Seasonal chlorophyll concentration and integrated seasonal chlorophyll concentration are presented for the four time periods used to represent the Southern New England annual phytoplankton cycle (see bottom panel). Concentration showed an increase in the winter period and a decline in the spring period during 2006, reflecting the poorly developed spring bloom. There only area showing a trend over time was the summer period where both concentration and magnitude have declined and remain at low levels.
