Fall 2012 Update: Spring Chlorophyll Concentration - Northeast Shelf Ecosystem
Most regions of the Northeast Shelf Large Marine Ecosystem have a well developed spring phytoplankton bloom. The spring bloom for the ecosystem as a whole was large and started earlier than the typical start date from the long-term data. This depiction of long-term trend in chlorophyll concentration is restricted to the data coming from the MODIS Aqua sensor only because of bias between the data from this sensor and the historical data from the SeaWiFS sensor. Bloom chlorophyll concentrations were in excess of 3 mg m-3 and in this composite view the bloom began in February.
