Study Fleet Program

Study Fleet Vessels

The vessels currently participating in the Study Fleet Program represent diverse fishing fleets in New England and the Mid-Atlantic. Some of the fisheries of interest represent data poor species, such as Atlantic hagfish and golden tilefish, for which study fleet data can provide improved precision of catch with regards to the spatial and temporal distribution of the resource. The focus of the program for other fisheries, such as the groundfish and yellowtail flounder industries, is to develop the ability for fishermen to provide accurate and precise self-reported catch estimates on a haul-by-haul basis through electronic means.

Vessels currently in the program hail from ports such as Portland, Maine; Hampton, New Hampshire; Gloucester and Rockport, Massachusetts; Point Judith and Newport, Rhode Island; Montauk, New York; and Barnegat Light, New Jersey.

Study Fleet Staff

Study Fleet staff are located at NOAA Fisheries Northeast Fisheries Science Center branches in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, Narragansett, Rhode Island, and Gloucester, Massachusetts.

The Science Center is the research arm of NOAA Fisheries in the region. The Center plans, develops, and manages a multidisciplinary program of basic and applied research to: (1) better understand living marine resources of the Northeast Continental Shelf Ecosystem from the Gulf of Maine to Cape Hatteras, and the habitat quality essential for their existence and continued productivity; and (2) describe and provide to management, industry, and the public, options for the conservation and utilization of living marine resources, and for the restoration and maintenance of marine environmental quality.
