Cooperative Research Programs at NEFSC
The Northeast Fisheries Science Center is the science arm of NOAA in the Northeast. The Center conducts an interdisciplinary program of marine research and analyses important for proper management of the nation's living marine resources and the ecosystems that support them. In recent years, this effort has included a growing sector of data and experimentation which is collected and conducted through cooperative research projects with academic and industry partners. These programs, the Cooperative Black Sea Bass Tagging Project is an example, not only provide unique data and insights, but also promote better communication and understanding of how science relates to management decisions and the implementation of natural resource policy.
Through public participation and cooperation we are working together towards the mutual goal of maximizing the utilization of our marine resources at a sustainable level. These projects have been found to be a more efficient and effective way of collecting the data required to survey the condition of these increasingly important resources. While providing crucial data, they also provide a vital link of communication, promoting trust and cooperation among the public sector and related government agencies.
