The large number of sharks currently being recaptured offers a unique opportunity for fishermen to assist biologists in age and growth studies.  By removing a section of the backbone and sending it to us, we are able to examine the ages and growth of the various shark species tagged and recaptured.
Remove a 6-10 inch section of the backbone, from above the gills

If you are keeping a tagged shark:

  1. Measure the fork length over the curve of the body.
  2. Remove a 6 - 10 ince piece of the backbone from over the gills (shown above).
  3. Freeze the backbone.
  4. Record the tagnumber, fork length and recapture details; give detailed information by phone.
