Background of NEFSC Documents

The Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC) issues reports in two secondary scientific literature series:

NOAA Technical Memorandum NMFS-NE (TM)
Northeast Fisheries Science Center Reference Document (CRD)

Citations other than CRD or TM, denote NEFSC authors in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS.

The TM series is irregular and contains: Through June 1994, the NEFSC issued two subseries of TMs:

NOAA Technical Memorandum NMFS-F/NEC (for the Northeast Fisheries Science Center)
NOAA Technical Memorandum NMFS-F/NER (for the Northeast Regional Operations Office)

In July 1994, both subseries were subsumed under the NOAA Technical Memorandum NMFS-NE subseries.

The CRD series began in 1989, and is also issued irregularly. Its scope of coverage includes: Through December 1988, the NEFSC issued five series of laboratory-based, secondary scientific literature:

Woods Hole Laboratory Reference Document
Narragansett Laboratory Reference Document
Sandy Hook Laboratory Report
Sandy Hook Laboratory Technical Series Report
Oxford Laboratory Informal Report

See History of Discontinued Scientific Series HERE
In January 1989, all five series were subsumed under the CRD series.

During 1993-95, CRD numbers were assigned but not finalized (i.e., 93-15,-16,-17,-20, and -21; 94-02,-03,-04,-15,-16,-18,-19,-20, and -21; and 95-03,-04,-05,-06,-07, and -16) and were expunged January 1, 1998.
If a number is later finalized, that document is assigned a new number with a reference to its previous number.

Contract and Grant Reports

In addition to producing its own publications, reports, and abstracts, the NEFSC also sponsors the production of such works with contracts and grants. The NEFSC awards funds to external organizations to conduct special, nonrecurring research when the NEFSC lacks the expertise, capability, and/or time to conduct such research itself. The final reports emanating from contract and grant research range from informal memoranda to formal publications, and can contribute significantly to the body of scientific knowledge.
NOTES:
Incomplete Records: For some items (especially for some of the older items), our files do not contain full documentation (no issuance date, missing contract number, etc.).
Obtaining/Viewing Copies: A copy of all contract and grant reports will eventually be maintained in the library at the NEFSC's Walford Library at Highlands, New Jersey (732-872-3035).
If you cannot locate a copy at that library, contact the NEFSC's Editorial Office which should be able to direct you to an NEFSC researcher with a copy (508-495-2228). Eventually, all contract and grant reports should be online and available for viewing through links on this webpage.
