Current Research Activities
1. Invertebrate fauna associated with deep-water Lophelia pertusa reefs
Co-Principal Investigator and Collaborator on research grants (NOAA Ocean Exploration, USGS, MMS) examining systematics, biodiversity and ecology of invertebrates, in particular, galatheid and brachyuran crabs occurring on and around deep-water coral banks off the southeastern United States (North Carolina to central Florida) and North Central Gulf of Mexico.
2. Galatheoid taxonomy, biodiversity, ecology, and population dynamics of Gulf of Mexico lower continental slope communities related to chemosynthetic and hard substrate habitats
Collaborator and Co-Principal Investigator on research grants (USGS, MMS) examining systematics, biodiversity and ecology of galatheoids associated with deep (> 1000 m) chemosynthetic and hard substrate habitats in the Gulf of Mexico.
3). Biodiversity, systematics, and ecology of lobsters
A. Contributor to FAO series of regional identification sheets for living marine resources. Author family accounts including keys to species, species descriptions, distributions, and fisheries information. East Central Atlantic sheets submitted.
B. Effect of predation of Caribbean spiny lobster on macrobenthic community structure in Florida Bay seagrass habitats. Experimental manipulation of spiny lobster abundance to examine subsequent effect on molluscan abundance and diversity.
4). Biodiversity assessment and systematic reappraisal of decapod crustaceans of the western Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico
A. New records of decapods in Chesapeake Bay.
B. Decapod crustacean assemblages collected at outer continental shelf habitats off New Jersey and North Carolina and in the Gulf of Mexico.
C. Decapod crustacean assemblage collected at Bear Sea Mount.
