From the photograph collection of Paul Galtsoff

Beginning with Spencer Baird, the first U.S. Fish Commissioner, Woods Hole-based biologists have traveled the world seeking specimens in order to study marine life in all its various forms.

This photograph from Paul Galtsoff’s collection shows a man cleaning a sponge from a creek on the island of Andros in the Bahamas.

The photograph was taken during a 1938 expedition to collect marine specimens for research.
