Weighing halibut aboard the Albatross IV

This four-and-one-half foot long Atlantic halibut
was collected on the Scotian Shelf in Canada on the first bottom trawl
survey aboard the new Albatross IV.
Fishermen Dominic Vadala (left)
and Joe Ferreira stand with the fish, while chief scientist Ray Fritz
(center) operates the beam balance used to weigh the fish, which tipped
the scale at approximately 100 pounds.
Survey vessels rarely land halibut this large,
although fishermen still land halibut in the 45-90 pound range. |
