| Vessel Email Reports | F/V Mary K Leg 5 |
| Wednesday, 29 April 2009 | The crew on the Mary K have now completed 4 depletion experiments. They began a fifth this morning but by the second tow had net performance problems and the experiment had to be terminated. They are now headed into shoal water to complete the last 2 calibrations tows before heading for home. They expect to be in New Bedford around noon tomorrow. |
| Tuesday, 28 April 2009 | Just spoke with Nathan on the Mary K. They have completed 3 depletion experiments and are scouting a site to do a 4th at this time. After they finish the depletion work, they have 2 more wing/door calibration tows to accomplish in 20 fathoms (it was too rough on the way out to do them). As of now, the plan is to return to New Bedford around noon on Thursday. Rob |

| Monday, 27 April 2009 | The
Mary K left New Bedford about 11am last Thursday morning. The headed toward
south onto the shelf to do some net geometry experiments. They quickly
discovered that both sets of wing sensors were not working properly. Since
that time they have been using a spare set of door sensors on the wings
and have gotten good door and wing spread data for tows out to 150 fathoms.
Beyond 150 they have been losing the wings spread data but have good door
spread info.
They began looking for depletions sites on Saturday and stumbled across fish yesterday. They have accomplished one depletion experiment and are getting ready to start another this morning. Hopefully they can stay on the fish and get some good data. More to come. |
| Vessel Email Reports | F/V Mary K Leg 4 |
| Thursday, 2 April 2009 | The
Mary K is headed to the last station of Leg 4. They should finish that
up about 3 or 4 this afternoon and head for home. This would bring them
in to New Bedford soon after noon tomorrow. The did well, finishing their
last 5 tows and completing 4 tows that had been assigned to the Endurance.
This drops the total remaining stations in the survey to 8.

| Wednesday, 1 April 2009 | The
Mary K has finished 4 stations since leaving New Bedford yesterday morning.
The weather is good and they hope to complete at least 4 more stations
before heading for home. Here are the details:

| Monday, 31 March 2009 | The
Mary K was sent packing by bad weather coming in Saturday evening. They
arrived in New Bedford around noon on Sunday. Since the last message they
have continued working Southern New England waters and have completed
an additional 10 stations. Here are the details:
Station, Strata-Tow, KG, Number, Notes They left New Bedford at 10am this morning and headed south to finish up the 5 remaining SNE stations. If any time is left after completing these stations they will hunt around for depletion sites. We should see them in Ned Bedford sometime Friday. |
| Thursday, 26 March 2009 | Just
heard from Anne on the Mary K. The weather is great and things are going
reasonably well. The have had a few hangs working the hard bottom SE of
Block Island but are making good progress otherwise. The stations accomplished
since leaving New Bedford are as follows:

| Tuesday, 17 March 2009 | Some
weather caught up with the Mary K last night and they had to stop sampling
for about 12 hours. They completed 3 stations since the update yesterday
and are back at work now. They hope to complete 3 more stations before
heading in to New Bedford tomorrow. I expect they will be at the dock
between 2 and 3 in the afternoon.
Stations since yesterday: Station, Strata-tow, Kg, Number |
| Monday, 16 March 2009 | The
gang on the Mary K are really going at it, having completed 15 stations
since Fridays message. The weather has been great and it should remain
so through the end of the cruise. They should finish their loop sometime
early Wednesday morning. They will then decide whether to come in and
get some rest or stay out and try and get a depletion experiment done
in an area Captain Henri thinks will have lots of monks.

SCI MARY K MESSAGE:GREETINGS FROM THE MARY K. ALTHOUGH THE WEATHER HAS
BEEN TRYING TO SLOW US DOWN, WE CONTINUE TO CRANK OUT STATIONS. WE HAVE
COMPLETED 6 STATIONS SO FAR AFTER LEAVING A DAY LATE AND LOOSING A FEW
HOURS JOGGING LAST NIGHT. WE HAVE BEEN ENCOUNTERING MONKFISH AT EVERY
STATION THE LARGEST SO FAR COMING IN AT 84 CM. OUR LARGEST CATCH OF
MONKFISH SO FAR WAS AT 81-3 WITH 47 FISH WEIGHING IN AT OVER 121KG .
WE ALSO HAD A TOW OF DEEPSEA RED CRABS WEIGHING IN AT OVER 300KG. THIS
MORNING WE CAUGHT A NICE SIZE TILEFISH IN WITH A TOW OF MONKFISH AND
SPINY DOGFISH. AS LONG AS THE WEATHER HOLDS WE WILL CONTINUE TO WORK
THE OFFSHORE STATIONS FOR THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. |
| Thursday, 12 March 2009 | Just
spoke with Geoff and the work is coming along on the Mary K. He has been
struggling with some computer issues and label printing problems but it
has not stopped them from getting stations done. The wind came up early
this morning and they had to suspend fishing for about 10 hours, but the
seas are coming down and they are getting ready to set out again.soon.
They have also had problems with great amounts of fixed gear in some sampling
areas. This has caused them to move inshore/offshore on a day/night cycle
so they can do the stations near gear when they can see the highflyers
well. Considering all the hurdles, they are doing great. Station progress
so far:

| Wednesday, 3 March 2009 | The
Mary K left Cape May early yesterday and resumed sampling on the shelf
off southern New Jersey. They have completed 6 stations since that time
(see below) with few monks in the mix. They have another 3 stations lined
up before they pack it in around 6 pm. If that schedule holds they should
arrive in New Bedford around 3 pm tomorrow.
Considering the weather this was another very successful leg. Great job all around. Station, Strata-tow, kg |
| Tuesday, 3 March 2009 | The
crew of the Mary K broke off work at about 5pm on Saturday due to awful
weather. They headed toward Cape May and arrived in port about 8am Sunday.
They spent Sunday and Monday tied up at the Lund Fisheries facility. The
plan was to head out this morning and continue working.
Sixteen station were accomplished between the Thursday message and breaking off on Saturday - pretty impressive, especially since many of the tows were in deep water. Here are the details for the tows. Station, Strata-tow, KG More soon... |

| Wednesday, 18 February 2009 | From Rob Johnston Just touched base with Nathan on the Mary K. They continue to make significant progress despite some minor computer problems and having to jog in rough seas for 10 or 12 hours Sunday into Monday. The stations accomplished since the last message are as follows: Station Strata-Tow They are now heading to 72-2. The weather is forecast to deteriorate so after completing this station they will be heading for home with an ETA of early Friday morning. Considering they lost 2.5 days due to
weather I think this has been an extremely successful leg. |
| Tuesday, 17 February 2009 | After
spending Thursday and Friday in Norfolk due to high winds and seas, the
F/V Mary K headed back out on Saturday morning. They have made good progress
since that time and accomplished most of the stations in the two southern
most strata sets. Monkfish catches have been light except in the deeper
strata. Below is their progress through Monday at 10am.

From Rob Johnston Just heard from Nate. They are in Norfolk since early this morning. The weather has deteriorated significantly (sound familiar?). Apparently the CG arranged for them to tie up at the Little Creek Sub-base. The fella on watch at the base however forgot to tell the MP's who promptly boarded the vessel in a flurry at sunrise. At one point there were 6 patrol cars, lights flashing on the dock. The MP's made multiple inspection!!! Nate said he got some pics. So much for getting some rest... They are moving over to AMC now and expect to be berthed next to our old friend Albatross IV. The weather looks to improve tomorrow so hopefully they will head out in an effort to complete the southern most stations. They completed 4 stations (after a loooong steam) before breaking off: Station
Strata-tow kg (approx.) Number I'll
keep you all updated P.S. It looks like the weather will deteriorate in the GOM today. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Endurance head into port sometime soon. I expect to talk to Sean at 11am. |
