The Woods
Hole Black History Month celebration kicked off Friday
February 2 with a presentation by Morgan
Mwalim Peters, a performer, storyteller, artist, and professor
at the University of Massachusetts,
Dartmouth. Peters discussed historical links in both the oral narrative
and musical traditions of Native American and African American cultures
and examined their influences on our current popular culture.
This year’s Woods Hole Black History Month theme is “From
Slavery to Freedom.” Events will
continue to be held on Friday afternoons in February. On February 9,
Dr. Ronald E. Mickens,
a professor at Clark Atlanta University,
will present on the African American presence in science. On February
15, Dr. Spencer Holland will discuss ways in which school systems fail
African American males. On February 22, the Woods Hole Black History
Month will have its final event, the Harambee,
a potluck feast at the Swope.
