Theoretical
physicists have recently applied what's
known about properties of light to show that a material could
be built that would render objects beneath it invisible. Building
such a material is still a stretch, especially one that could
deflect visible light, but lots of people are working on it.
What
would humans do with the ability to make themselves and their
stuff invisible? Hmmmm... let's think of some examples. H.G.
Wells' Invisible
Man: goes nuts, turns criminal, killed. Kevin
Bacon in "Hollowman":
jerk becomes invisible jerk, goes nuts, killed. Romulans,
the Anti-Vulcans (okay, technically not humans but played by
them on TV): cloak their
warships to gain tactical advantages over wholesome Federation
star ships just minding their own business. Harry
Potter: sneaks around and finds out stuff he should,
and should not, know. You get the idea.
