Hallway Poll #6: Lost Lambs

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is at it again, going where they say no other enforcement agent will go: in the wake of Japanese whalers conducting a scientific whaling cruise in the Antarctic Ocean. The hunt has been vetted through the International Whaling Commission, but is controversial. Sea Shepherd began the 2007 activist year by offering a $25,000 reward for the location of the whalers. Shortly thereafter, Britain yanked their vessel registration. The group raised a pirate flag and the whaler hunt was on, “the can opener” at the ready, acid bottles stowed, and pie cannon in lock, ready for load. After five weeks, Sea Shepherd found a whaler, and almost immediately had to ask its assistance to find crew members who went adrift while trying to foul the prop of a whaling ship. Days later, Sea Shepherd rammed one Japanese vessel, damaging both, and resulting in a distress call. Sea Shepherd leaders say they are considering a final assault, even if it means irreparable damage to their boat, a sacrifice the group has made in the past.

It’s theatrical and dangerous, but how effective is whale activism under a pirate flag?

A. Effective: the free media exposure about continued whaling, even if its scientific, may advance whale conservation

B. Negative: raises tensions and slows international negotiations for whale conservation

C. Ineffectual: it’s a sideshow, fun until someone loses an eye
