Hallway Poll #1: Marine "Yeti" Found
at 7,540 Feet: What Is It Really?
Background:
Earlier this month, an international team of researchers
announced their discovery of a heretofore undescribed crustacean
in very deep water about 900 miles south of Easter Island.
Popular accounts of the find described it as a "furry
lobster." The scholarly account is here,
and the finders identify is as a new "squat lobster" family.
Other researchers see more crab-like than lobster-like characteristics.
The jury looks to be out for awhile as peers review the finding,
so we might as well weigh in. View an excellent picture and
more background here,
then cast your vote for the final family determination.
Results:
- Lobster - 25
- Crab - 17
- Neither - 13
