The NEFSC’s Population Biology Branch pursues basic and applied research regarding the biology and ecology of fishes in the North Atlantic Ocean. This research includes: a) aging and growth, b) reproductive biology, c) predator-prey interactions, and d) distribution and migration patterns. Research products from the Branch are used in original research publications, as data in stock assessment models, and for management advice. The principal species of interest for such investigations are groundfishes (cods, hakes, and flounders), pelagic fishes (mackerel, herring), elasmobranchs (sharks, skates, and rays), and select invertebrates (surfclam, squid, and northern shrimp). |
Additionally, feeding data analyses and trophic modeling studies investigate ecosystem-level processes and management. The NEFSC’s Population Biology Branch has programs located in Woods Hole, MA, (Fishery Biology Program, Food Web Dynamics Program) and Narragansett, RI (Apex Predator Program).
