What To Do If You Find a Yellowtail Tag

Step 1. Remove Tag & Determine the Type

There are 2 tags on each yellowtail flounder connected by a metal pin. A numbered tag on top of the fish, and a blank or scale tag on the bottom of the fish. Use plyers to cut the pin and remove the tags.

There are 4 types of numbered tags that are positioned on the top of the fish:

1. Pink $100 reward discs
2. Pink $1000 lottery discs
3. Yellow high reward discs
4. Green data storage tags

And either blank or scale tags on the
bottom of the fish:

1. Pink blank
2. Pink scale tag
3. Orange scale tag

Step 2. Data Collection

Please collect the following information for all tags:

  • Tag Number
  • Date
  • Location
  • Water Depth
  • Fish Length
If the bottom tag was a pink scale tag or an orange scale tag, please collect a scale sample. Just scrape off a few scales from the tail region and place them in an envelope or clean container.

Why return tags?
Every tag counts! The greater the number
of tags reported, the more accurate the data,
and better stock movements and growth
estimates can be made.

Yellowtail flounder is one of New England's
most productive and valuable fisheries, and
every bit of information will help its future.
