Scientists & Research Partners

Steve Cadrin, NOAA/UMass CMER Director, New Bedford, MA

Steve has been a fisheries biologist for 18 years. He has recently expanded his role with NOAA by accepting a position as UMass Cooperative Marine Education and Research (CMER) Director. Steve is still involved with stock assessments of yellowtail flounder and his research interests include applications of electronic tagging to stock assessment science.

Josh Moser, Integrated Statistics, Woods Hole, MA

Josh has been with NEFSC for nearly 3 years working with Gary Shepherd on a cooperative black sea bass tagging project. He has assisted with many other cooperative studies including yellowtail tagging. Josh spent 2 years prior to NEFSC in Zambia, Africa teaching fisheries aquaculture. Josh was also field coordinator for the 2005 scup tagging season at the NEFSC.

Larry Alade, NOAA/UMES Graduate Scientist, Woods Hole, MA

Larry is working on the population models and holding studies for the yellowtail tagging project. At the same time, he is busily finishing off his course work and thesis for his PhD. from University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

Cathy Sumi, Integrated Statistics, Woods Hole, MA

Cathy recently joined the yellowtail tagging team to coordinate outreach, tag reporting, and work on our constantly growing database. Cathy has studied sea urchin and grey seal populations on the shores of eastern Canada, but for the last 2 years she has worked with New England fishermen to collect fisheries data.

Dave Martins, School for Marine Science and Technology, UMass Dartmouth

Dave is a Stock Assessment Technician at SMAT, and when he is not at sea tagging yellowtail or cod, he can be found collecting tags at the docks in New Bedford and organizing research field work. Dave's repore and dedicated attention to dockside outreach, has contributed enormously to the tag return pool.

Rodney Avila, New Bedford MA

Rodney has decades of experience in the Georges Bank yellowtail flounder fishery as an owner and operator of the F/V Trident. Rodney has cooperated in developing tagging protocol and will continue to support outreach activities in New Bedford, where nearly half of the U.S. yellowtail catch is landed.

David Goethel, F/V Ellen Diane, Hampton NH

David is an experienced New England groundfish fisherman with experience in cod tagging and cooperative research. David has been instrumental in the cage experiments to study tag induced mortality of yellowtail and continues to help with outreach in the Gulf of Maine area

Luis Ribas, F/V Blue Skies, Provincetown, MA
Luis has been involved in international fisheries for decades. Luis participates in local and regional research projects and management councils. He also fishes full time off Cape Cod. Luis and his family have been the leading boat in the Provincetown "Blessing of the Fleet" for the past several years.

Fred Mattera, F/V Travis & Natalie, W. Kingston RI

Fred is a highliner in the yellowtail fishery and has been instrumental in the development of the Cooperative Research Partners Program industry-based survey (IBS) for yellowtail. Fred has also provided input for the tagging study design and will coordinate recaptures in the IBS study.
