Research

The information requirements associated with the complex decision making process involved in fisheries and environmental management often outstrips the capabilities of the agency’s in-house staff. What can be more logical than to turn to the nation’s universities? CMER offers the government a way of utilizing the full range of academic talent the universities have to offer.

Education

The decisions we have to make about fisheries management will not go away tomorrow; in fact, they may become even more difficult in the future. We expect to meet this challenge with the benefit of better and more complete information. A new generation of scientists and technically capable managers are needed to deal with these problems and CMER will contribute by providing research opportunities for new scientists interested in marine science.

shark swimming Sharks are important apex predators in the marine environment. The CMER Program has funded a variety of projects on shark biology that have contributed to the management of these important resources.
