2005 Interns

2005 summer intern group photo

In 2005 the Northeast Regional Office was pleased to sponsor 10 students as part of our Summer Intern Program, which is a diversity initiative. Once again, the students came from all over the United States, from Worcester, Massachusetts to Farmington, New Mexico, and represented a wide array of academic institutions and disciplines. The following nine students were part of the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education’s (ORISE) Department of Commerce program:

  • Charles Beverley, Jr., Morehouse College - Management and Information
  • Erica Castaneda, Little Priest Tribal College – Sustainable Fisheries
  • William “Chris” Charles, University of Maryland – Highly Migratory Species
  • Timothy Harrell, Elizabeth City State University – Information Resources Management
  • Monique Kirkman-Bey, Howard University - State, Federal, Constituent Programs
  • Amanda Laskovics, Wittenberg University – Protected Resources
  • James Rider, Middle Tennessee State University - Management and Information
  • Justin Spear, Savannah State University - Management and Information
  • Michala Turner, Rust College - Protected Resources

Maureen Shenberger, a graduate student from Clark University, joined us for the summer through the Entry Point! Program. Entry Point! is a program within the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) offering students with disabilities outstanding internship opportunities in science, engineering, mathematics, computer science, and some fields of business. The Northwest Science Center hosted 2 interns from this program in 2004 and we were pleased that they extended use of their contract with AAAS to other regions for 2005.

Planned field trips for 2005 included a visit to the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography, where the interns could observe fishing gear deployment and participate in catch classification on a research vessel, and have a chance to speak to graduate students and the Associate Dean about advanced studies, and a trip aboard the F/V Ocean Reporter with Captain Bill Lee.
